Learn how to pick the right cat carrier for your small dog with our size and comfort guide, including key decision rules and product insights.
Quick Answer
For small dogs, choose a carrier that lets them stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably. The Catit Voyageur carrier offers durable, safe transport with two sizes to fit your dog's measurements.
Why Size Matters for Small Dogs
A carrier that's too small can cause stress and discomfort, while one that's too large may not provide enough security. Measure your dog from nose to tail base and from floor to top of head while standing, then add a few inches for wiggle room.
Small dogs often feel safer in cozy spaces, but they still need enough room to shift positions during travel. A snug fit also prevents sliding around during car rides or when carried.
Comfort Features to Look For
Ventilation is crucial for airflow, especially on warm days or longer trips. Look for mesh panels or windows that allow your dog to see out and get fresh air.
A secure door with a reliable latch prevents accidental escapes. The Catit Voyageur features a side latch system and a safety lock to keep the door in place, giving you peace of mind during transit.
Consider the carrying method: top handles are standard, but shoulder straps or wheels can reduce strain if you travel frequently.
Decision Rules for Choosing the Right Carrier
- Measure your dog: Measure your dog's length (nose to tail base) and height (floor to top of head while standing). Add 2-3 inches to each dimension for comfort. Use these measurements to compare against carrier dimensions.
- Check weight capacity: Ensure the carrier's weight limit exceeds your dog's current weight. If the product doesn't list a weight limit, contact the manufacturer or choose a carrier with a higher limit for safety. Weigh your dog and verify the carrier's stated capacity.
- Test the fit: Place your dog in the carrier and observe if they can stand, turn around, and lie down without being cramped. If they can't, choose the next size up. Do a trial run at home before traveling.
- Prioritize security: Look for a carrier with a secure latch and safety lock. The Catit Voyageur's side latch system and safety lock provide reliable closure. Double-check the door is locked before every trip.
